About UsConscious Café is a non-accredited IT course and very much a members’ group where decisions are made collectively, with direct member involvement in the design, development and delivery of activities. This women’s-only group has been meeting since October 2014 and has been supported by donations and grants. The group was initially engaged in activities such as art and crafts, jewellery making and cake decorating. The impetus for the current computer literacy project came out of discussion and suggestions from Café members. In sessions, we process what is happening through dialoguing, reviewing and evaluating the benefits of group activities to ensure that members’ well-being, social interaction, learning and interests are catered for.

Who We Are |
The Café is set up with a Management Team, which includes a professional tutor and one/two assistant tutors, an IT technician, a secretary, an accountant, a co-ordinator and Director in place. The main tutor has much experience in community teaching and, with her two assistants, will remain flexible in order to ensure that learners’ needs are met. The class is vibrant, motivated and at every point supported in their desire to fulfil their potential.

What We Do |
Conscious Café initiative is unique in that it is not just a women’s-only space, but mainly for Grandmothers who have missed out on computer literacy opportunities because of the business of bringing up their children and their children’s children. These children have now ‘flown the nest’ for one reason or another. A consequence of this is that Conscious Café Computer Classes are the new channels of communication being opened up for the women to ‘keep in touch’ with younger members of the family as they can now engage with them through modern day social media and IT.
Conscious Café is also as much about social interaction, breaking down of cultural barriers, mental and physical wellbeing, hospitality and lots of fun as it is about learning new skills. We have found, to date, news of the project has been spread by word-of-mouth. Altogether, approximately 60 women have passed through Conscious Café Computer Classes since March 2017. |
